About this speed test

What do download, upload, latency and jitter mean?

Download is how fast data reaches you (streaming, loading pages). Upload is how fast you send it (video calls, backing up photos). Both are in megabits per second (Mbps). Latency, or ping, is how long a round trip to the server takes, in milliseconds; lower is better for games and calls. Jitter is how much latency varies from one moment to the next; low jitter keeps calls smooth.

How fast should my internet be?

About 5 Mbps covers email and browsing, 25 Mbps handles HD video on one screen, and 100 Mbps leaves room for 4K streaming and video calls on several devices at once. Busy households with big downloads benefit from 500 Mbps or more. For video calls, upload matters too: aim for at least 3 to 5 Mbps up.

Why is my result different from Speedtest.net or Fast.com?

Each test measures the path to a different server with its own method. This one uses Cloudflare's nearest data center, Speedtest.net picks one of its own servers near you, and Fast.com measures the path to Netflix. Results also change with Wi-Fi signal, other devices on your network and the time of day, so test a few times before drawing conclusions.

How much data does a speed test use?

It depends on your speed, because the test keeps going until each transfer takes about a second. Expect roughly 50 MB on a slower mobile connection, around 150 MB on a 100 Mbps line and up to about 400 MB on gigabit fiber. If you're on a capped mobile plan, test on Wi-Fi.

Does my test go through your server?

No. The test runs between your browser and Cloudflare's network, using Cloudflare's open-source speed test engine, so your result isn't limited by my server. Cloudflare keeps anonymous test results to study internet quality, and my site's analytics counts each finished test with its rounded speeds, the same way it counts page views.

Tips for an accurate result

Pause downloads, streams and backups on your other devices, and close other tabs. A cable to your router shows what your plan delivers; Wi-Fi shows what you get where you're sitting. If the speed is far below what you pay for, restart your router and test again before calling your provider.
