Quick math that follows the order of operations, with your keyboard or a tap
Type on your keyboard too: Enter for =, Backspace to delete, Esc to clear.
Yes. Type digits and the operators + − * / (x also multiplies), % for percent and ( ) for brackets. Enter or = shows the result, Backspace deletes the last character, and Esc clears everything. A comma works as a decimal point too.
The standard order of operations: brackets first, then multiplication and division, then addition and subtraction, from left to right. So 2 + 3 × 4 is 14. Many basic calculators work out each step as you press it and give 20.
On its own, a percentage is a fraction: 50% is 0.5. Multiplying gives a percentage of a number: 200 × 10% is 20. After + or −, it adds or subtracts a percentage of the number before it, which is handy for tips, tax and discounts: 200 + 10% is 220 and 200 − 10% is 180.
Computers store numbers in binary, where a decimal like 0.1 can't be stored exactly, so many online calculators show 0.1 + 0.2 as 0.30000000000000004. This one adds and subtracts decimals exactly and rounds every result to 15 significant digits, the same precision a spreadsheet like Excel shows, so you see 0.3.
Each number you type can have up to 15 digits. Results of a quadrillion (1015) or more, or smaller than 0.000000001, are shown in scientific notation, so 123456789 × 987654321 shows as 1.21932631112635e17, meaning 1.21932631112635 × 1017.
No. The calculator runs in your browser, so your numbers never reach my server. My site's analytics counts that the calculator was used, the same way it counts page views, but never what you typed.
This calculator can also go in the Tools menu on my homepage, next to a speed test, a password generator, a file converter and more.
