MOV and MP4 are closer than people expect. Both are boxes built on the same Apple-designed format, and the video inside an iPhone MOV is usually ordinary H.264 or HEVC — the very thing an MP4 is meant to hold. The reason a MOV gets rejected by an upload form or a Windows app is almost never the video itself; it is the label on the box.
So this page does not re-encode anything. It reads the streams out of the MOV and writes them into an MP4 container, untouched, then moves the index to the front of the file so it starts playing before it has finished downloading. The result is the same video at the same quality, produced in seconds rather than minutes, and generated on your device.
If a file will not rewrap it is because the streams genuinely cannot live in an MP4 — ProRes and animation codecs from editing software are the usual culprits. When only the audio is the problem, which happens with older MOVs that carry uncompressed sound, the audio alone is re-encoded and the video is still copied as-is.
No. The video and audio are copied bit for bit into the new container. What you get is the same footage with a different wrapper, which is why it is so much faster than a real conversion.
Its video codec cannot go into an MP4 — ProRes, Animation, and other editing formats are the common ones. Rewrapping cannot fix that, and a full re-encode of a large file is too slow to do in a browser, so the tool tells you rather than pretending.
If the source was H.264, yes, everywhere. Newer iPhones record HEVC, which stays HEVC inside the MP4 — Windows 11 plays it, older Windows may want the HEVC extension. The picture is identical either way.
Often, yes. If the streams inside are MP4-compatible — usually H.264 with AAC or MP3 audio — the same rewrap works. If they are not, the conversion stops with an explanation.
