About video trimmer
Most trims should not re-encode anything. If you only want the middle two minutes of a recording, the fastest and cleanest thing to do is copy those two minutes of the existing video and audio into a new file, untouched. That is what this page does by default, which is why it finishes almost instantly and why the clip looks exactly like the original.
The catch is where the cut can land. Compressed video only stores complete pictures every so often — keyframes — and everything between them is described relative to those. A copy has to begin at one, so your clip may start up to a couple of seconds before the time you asked for. Tick "Cut at the exact second" and the video is re-encoded so the cut lands precisely, at the cost of some time and a small amount of quality.
The preview player is the scrubbing tool: pause where you want the clip to begin, press "Use player" beside Start, do the same for End, and trim.
Frequently asked questions
Does trimming lose quality?
Not by default. The original video and audio are copied into the new file without being decoded and re-compressed, so the clip is identical to that part of the source. Only the exact-cut option re-encodes, and it does so at high quality.
Why did my clip start earlier than the time I typed?
A stream copy has to start at a keyframe, and keyframes are usually one to a few seconds apart. The cut snaps back to the nearest one before your start time. Tick "Cut at the exact second" to get the precise moment instead.
Which formats can I trim?
MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV, and AVI. A copy keeps the original container, so trimming a WebM gives you a WebM. The exact-cut option always produces an MP4.
Can I join two clips together?
Not yet — joining video is a much harder problem when the two files were encoded differently. Merging is available for PDFs today, and video may follow if people ask for it.
