GIFs are a terrible video format and an excellent way to make a point in a chat, an issue tracker, or a document that will not play video. This page takes a section of a video you already have and turns it into one, entirely on your device.
The quality comes from how the colours are chosen. A GIF can only hold 256 of them, so this tool scans your clip first, builds a palette tuned to the colours actually in it, and only then draws the frames. That is why the result looks far better than the muddy, banded GIFs a naive conversion produces.
Use the player to find the moment you want, press "Use player" next to Start and End, and adjust the frame rate and width if the file comes out bigger than you would like. Clips are capped at 30 seconds — past that a GIF is larger than the video it came from and nobody wins.
GIF compresses each frame on its own, while video compression stores only what changed between frames. A 10-second GIF at 480 px can easily be several megabytes. Lower the frame rate to 8 or 12, cut the width to 320 px, or shorten the clip.
Thirty seconds. It is a hard cap because beyond that the file gets unusable — and if you need longer than that, a trimmed video is almost always the better thing to share.
No. The GIF format has no audio at all. If the sound is the point, trim the video instead, or extract the audio as an MP3.
Because 256 colours is all a GIF has. This tool picks the best 256 for your specific clip and dithers between them, which handles most footage well, but smooth gradients and sunsets will always show some banding.
